- Accreditations -
All our clinical team adhere to the General Dental Council’s (GDC) guidance, 'Standards for Dental Professionals', which sets out what you can expect from the Dental Profession in the UK. The GDC is the statutory body which regulates dentistry in the UK and its guidance covers personal registration of dental professionals and ensures compliance with continuing professional development and training. |
We are also subject to external regulation from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which registers services, the NHS (which inspects all practices which are contracted to provide NHS services), plus a wide range of other regulators (there are atleast 15 separate entities with the right to enter and inspect various aspects of a dental practice, enforcing compliance with over 35 acts of parliament - roughly the same as a hospital). |
In addition to these legal obligations we have gained independant external accreditation. This both assists us in ensuring we are compliant with our obligations, (which are complex, constantly changing and as a consequence difficult to monitor for an organisation of our size), and gives assurance to our patients that they will be cared for in a safe, up to date, professional and ethical environment that has voluntarily opened itself up to external peer review and scrutiny. And passed! |
Denplan Excel |
This was the first nationwide, independently validated Clinical Governance programme, and we were very proud to be one of the first practices in Cumbria to attain accreditation. Denplan Excel is an advanced accreditation programme for dentists to help support Clinical Governance and professional regulation and was the first programme of its kind to be recognised by dentistry's new regulator the CQC. It involves regular on site inspections by independent, experienced dentists, all of whom are both practice owners, and have undergone specific training in practice inspection. These include case reviews and audit of x rays and patient notes. All applicant practices are assessed against the Denplan Quality Programme, and the bar for Excel accreditation is set high - well in excess of the 'essential' standards. We are also required to meet high standards of patient communication and we undergo regular patient surveys. |
BDA Good Practice |
The BDA Good Practice Scheme is a quality assurance framework for UK dental practices. By becoming members of the Scheme, practices demonstrate a visible commitment to providing quality dental care to nationally recognised best practice standards. Compliance with this standard is assessed by specially trained dentally qualified assessors during a rigorous practice inspection. As this standard applies to the practice as a whole, all staff are subject to questioning and required to demonstrate compliance with the standard within they defines role. |
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has accepted that membership of the Scheme is a reliable indication that the practice is using a QA framework. Practices meeting the Scheme standard should be well positioned for meeting CQC compliance. |
The Good Practice Scheme Quality Statement is at the heart of the BDA Good Practice Scheme - ten simple sentences that sum up everything the Scheme stands for: |
1 |
We aim to provide dental care of consistently good quality for all patients. |
2 |
We only provide care that meets your needs and wishes. |
3 |
We aim to make your treatment as comfortable and convenient as possible. |
4 |
We look after your general health and safety while receiving dental care. |
5 |
We follow current guidelines on infection control. |
6 |
We check for mouth cancer and tell you what we find. |
7 |
We take part in continuing professional development to keep our skills and knowledge up-to-date. |
8 |
We train all staff in practice-wide work systems and review training plans once a year. |
9 |
We welcome feedback and deal promptly with any complaints. |
10 |
Every member of the practice is aware of the need to work safely under General Dental Council guidelines. |
