Routine Extraction |
The majority of tooth extractions are classed as a routine dental treatment. Something in which we carry out most days and for many different reasons for instance: orthodontic treatment or in a circumstance when a tooth cant be "saved" IE root treated. The term "routine extraction" simply means that the extraction is fairly straightforward and no problems are anticipated IE a surgical approach to removing the teeth is not anticipated. Sometimes it is not always easy to tell when a tooth will need a surgical approach. If we do find when completing your routine extraction that we need to take a surgical approach we will inform you and give you any support you may need. We will always warn you prior to your appointment of this possibility. Teeth that are harder to remove will require ‘surgical’ extraction procedures. |
Complex Surgical Extraction |
A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure compared to the routine extraction. This approach is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not erupted in the mouth fully. It can also occur when the roots of the tooth snap and need to be removed separately. A surgical extraction usually takes more time than a routine extraction. The time in which your spent in the chair all depends on: the position of the tooth, the length and curvature of the roots and the thickness of bone surrounding the tooth. When gum tissue covers the tooth we may need to make an incision is to expose the tooth for removal. If bone covers part of the tooth, the surgeon will remove bone to fully expose and extract the tooth. We will use a surgical motor to perform these surgeries. If an incision is needed, sutures may be placed to aid with healing. |

See "sedation" tab under "treatment & the cost of care". This will give you further information on our sedation services and what we can provide for you. If you feel you need sedation for your extraction due to dental anxiety - then this can be discussed prior to your extraction appointment. |

Referrals |
Our practice is one of very few general practices in Cumbria who are contracted to provide both inhalational and intravenous sedation for anxious patients. Most other general practices will refer patients who require these more advanced services to our colleagues in Special Care Dentistry. |
We accept private referral cases! If you would like to send us a private referral then get in touch! You can email Dr David Smith at [email protected] or contact us on 01229 772319. |
We no longer accept NHS referral cases. We used to run an oral surgery network for NHS referral patients, but unfortunately at the moment we are no longer offering this service but will update the website if we begin this service again in the future. See "NHS Dentistry" tab for more information on the service we used to provide. |
Although we are experienced in surgery, and accept referrals, we only take on cases we are confident we can perform. Where the situation is outside our competency we will refer you to our more experienced specialist colleagues in hospital. |
Dental Implants |
We do not provide these, but are able to refer you to experienced and professional colleagues locally in this field. Ask us for our recommendations - we have been to their practices, seen them work and reviewed their finished cases. Costs range from £2500 for a implant supported crown upwards depending upon complexity, how many implants are required and what restoration is intended. These are a serious investment, but the results can be astonishing! We also monitor your implants and go through a thorough check list when you attend for your regular examinations. |
